Why did you get into pet sitting/dog walking?
I’ve always had an affinity for animals. Growing up, I wanted to be a veterinarian. But, as sometimes happens, life had its own course. During college, I majored in social science and business and also worked at a local doggie daycare. After I got my degree, I landed in a professional job at a local community college and worked there for a number of years. While at the community college, a good friend and local dog trainer needed help with the business management side of her pet services company and asked me to jump on board. Not long into my new gig, she found out that she would be moving out of the country. She asked me to buy the business. I was reluctant at first, but it ended up being one of the best and most fulfilling decisions I’ve ever made.
What is the most fulfilling part of owning a pet sitting/dog walking business?
As a former Nordstrom gal, customer service was ingrained in me. I can say the most fulfilling part of owning Platinum Leash is working with the clients. I love offering a service that has an immediate impact. The dogs can exert their pent-up energy, and the client can go about their day knowing their pet is receiving the highest quality care. Aside from my clients, I love working with my contractors. We are a team, and we work together every day to provide top-notch pet care services. I am lucky that I have a solid business partner who is also my husband. We work together to build relationships daily, and the interactions between the animals and humans in my life make each day an adventure.
What is the most challenging?
The same things that make owning a pet service business fulfilling also make it extremely challenging. When you own a service-based business, you meet and work with a lot of unique personalities. It’s a challenge to be successful in a work environment with such wide-ranging styles of communication. That being said, it is equally as difficult to hire the right people to work for your company. Working through those two challenges is key.
Where do you see your business in 5 years?
In five years, I see Platinum Leash with an expanded footprint in the Portland metro area with more emphasis on small animal pet sittings. I have a background in working with small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, rodents, and chickens. I’d also like to be in at least one more market in Oregon or Washington, offering the same level of customer service and client satisfaction that we currently offer in the Portland area.
What has Time To Pet changed the most about how you run your business?
Time To Pet has given me control. Before switching to TTP, I was using several different applications to run my daily operations. I was always worried that I was going to miss something. Time To Pet offers all of my needs in one application that is simple to use, and the clients seem to really like it. I spend less time invoicing and more time marketing and meeting with clients.
